Bertha D. Shanks

Bertha D. Shanks, 89, of Eaton, OH, passed away Saturday morning, March 1, 2014 at her home. Born December 15, 1924 in Dayton, OH, she was a daughter of the late Oliver J. & Ellen F. (Popst) Grutsch. She worked as a custodian for Preble Shawnee Local Schools, retiring after 15 years of service. She was a life member of the Auxiliary of American Legion Post # 215 of Eaton. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death in 1961 by husband John D. Shanks: sisters Elda J. "Dutch" Bricker and Adaline M. Shanks: and brother Warren O. Grutsch. Survived by children Ellen Jones & husband Fred of Eaton; and Rodger Shanks & wife Janet of Franklin, OH: grandchildren Fran Clark & husband Bill of Eaton; John Jones & wife Tish of Eaton; Jeff Shanks and John Shanks: great grandchildren Hannah and Keisha Clark, Adaline Jones, and Ashley Smith all of Eaton: nieces and nephews: and good friends Janet Cook and Dr. Allen DuBro. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Robert L. Crooks Funeral Center at Preble Memory Gardens - 3377 US Rt. 35 - West Alexandria. Friends may call on the family from 5:00 - 8:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gratis Church of the Brethren or the Eaton Baptist Temple. Burial Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
